FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010
Memorable Events – Past and Present
Coke is the official sponsor of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but competitor Pepsi’s brilliant two and a half minute “Oh Africa” is the first World Cup related advertisement to make the viral chart, and portends well for Pepsi’s revamped focus on social media, including YouTube.
Pepsi released their new TV advert for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa in late February. In the video, some of the greatest football stars Messi, Henry, Kaka, Lampard, Arshavin and Drogba are faced with inventive African locals who have their own set of rules, as they play a pickup match. Hundreds of Africans rush to them, forming a virtual playing field. The stars desperately try to defeat the locals, but as they advance towards the adversary’s goal, the bystanders move along with them, effectively moving the playing field.
The song featured is “Oh Africa” by Senegalese-American multi platinum selling artist Akon. Oh Africa was created together with Keri Hilson, and envisions to benefit underprivileged African youth.
