Today marks the 187th birth anniversary of Nain Singh Rawat (October 21, 1830 – February 1, 1882). He was one of the first of the late 19th century Indian explorers (pundits) who explored the Himalayas for the British. He hailed from the Milam village in the Johar Valley of Kumaon in present day Uttarakhand. He mapped the trade route through Nepal to Tibet, determined for the first time the location and altitude of Lhasa, and mapped a large section of the Tsangpo (Brahmaputra River).

Today marks the 107th birth anniversary of Professor Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (October 19, 1910 – August 21, 1995), a renowned Indian astrophysicist who was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize for Physics with William A Fowler. His mathematical treatment of stellar evolution yielded many of the best current theoretical models of the later evolutionary stages of massive stars and black holes. The Chandrasekhar limit is named after him. S Chandrasekhar is the first astrophysicist to have won a Nobel Prize for his theory on the evolution of stars.

Today marks the 103rd birth anniversary of Begum Akhtar (October 7, 1914 – October 30, 1974), a renowned Indian singer of Ghazals. Her genre was, however, not ghazals alone, but also included splendid renderings of Hindustani classical music like Dadra and Thumri. She received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for vocal music, and was awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan (posthumously) by Government of India. She was also referred to as Mallika-e-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazals). Apart from her singing, she also acted in several films, the most notable being Satyajit Ray’s Jalsaghar.

Khudiram Bose was an Indian Bengali freedom fighter, who was the youngest revolutionary early in the Indian independence movement. At the time of his hanging, he was 18 years, 8 months and 8 days old. He was born on December 3, 1889 in the village of Mohoboni at Keshpur Block in Paschim Midnapore district of West Bengal. Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki were chosen by Barindra Kumar Ghosh and tasked with the murder of Kingsford, the District Magistrate of Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Prafulla shot himself dead, and Khudiram was arrested. He was hanged to death at 6 am on August 11, 1908.
