Twitter News – Political Satire
Chinese authorities have handed out a year-long labour re-education sentence, from November 15, 2010 to November 9, 2011 in Zhenzhou Shibali river labour re-education camp, to an online activist for re-tweeting a tweet frοm hеr fiance, Hua Chunhui (Twitter username: @wxhch).
Cheng Jianping, who uses the online pseudonym Wang Yi (Twitter username: wangyi09), was arrested after she added her comment to a message from Hua that she reposted on Twitter on October 17.
‘Angry youth! Charge!’ she wrote next to Hua’s message, in which he said the best way to enliven anti-Japanese protests would be to ‘fly immediately to Shanghai and smash the Japanese pavilion at the World Expo.’
‘It was kind of satirical,’ Hua said of Cheng’s comment, adding that she was sent to the labour camp ‘only because she put five characters before my Tweet.’
“Sentencing someone to a year in a labour camp, without trial, for simply repeating another person’s clearly satirical observation on Twitter demonstrates the level of China’s repression of online expression,” Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International’s director for the Asia-Pacific, said in a statement.
On thеіr wedding day on November 15, both wеrе taken away bу thе police. Hua wаѕ released five days later. Police transferred Cheng Jianping Tuesday night to the Shibalihe Women’s Re-Eduation Through Labour Centre in the central city of Zhengzhou in Henan province after a local judicial committee passed the sentence, Hua Chunhui said.
Angry youth! Charge! RT @ wxhch: Anti-Japanese demonstrations, smashing Japanese products, that was all done years ago … It’s not a new trick. If you really wanted to kick it up a notch, you’d immediately fly to Shanghai to smash the Japanese Expo pavilion.
