Malware and email scam are working together in a vicious cycle. Fake ‘Facebook Password Reset Confirmation’ emails carry Trojan. Be very careful if you receive an unsolicited email claiming to come from “Facebook Support” [help@facebook.com]. The emails, which all have the subject line “Facebook Password Reset Confirmation! Customer Support.”, claim that the recipient’s new password is contained in the attached file.

Today, I received a message which claims to come from Facebook into one of my email accounts that is not my registered email address with them. I immediately got suspiscious.

The fake email message reads:

Facebook Password Reset Confirmation! Customer Support. Wednesday, 17 March, 2010 4:39

From: “Facebook Support”
To: [masked]
Messagecontains attachments
1 File (46KB)

Dear user of facebook,

Because of the measures taken to provide safety to our clients, your password has been changed.
You can find your new password in attached document.

Thanks,

Your Facebook.

As you could see there is a zipped attachment which doesn’t contain your new password, it’s actually a trojan. The purpose of this fraudulent email is yet another trick to get you fall into a trap to download the malicious zip file. It will subsequently download and execute additional malicious files from the Internet, such as rogue anti-spyware, infect your computer and steal your identity.

What to do?

If an email looks strange, don’t click on any of the links in it, and delete it from your inbox immediately. Be especially wary of emails that ask you to update your account, tell you to open an attachment, or warn you to act quickly before something happens.

Please, remember Facebook never sends you password as an attached email document.
