Weekend Video Post – Tabla Player
I have made friends with many creative artists on the social media like twitter, facebook and myspace. Some of them are still very young, nevertheeless highly talented. One of them is Sourabh Goho, a tabla player from the City of Joy, Kolkata, India.
He is just 19 years old and is pursing B.Com (Accountancy Honours) from Asutosh College, but as a tabla player he has already performed in many on stage functions, won many competitions, and featured in printed and electronic media. He is so humble that he still calls himself, a student of tabla. This humility and eagerness to learn and perform well, will take him to great heights.
Sourabhnayan Goho, who has mastered the art of playing the tabla from an early age, is my featured artist today.
Playing technique involves extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of different sounds, reflected in the mnemonic syllables (bol). The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure or in a sliding motion on the larger drum so that the pitch is changed during the sound’s decay.

Brief Life-sketch of Sourabh Goho
Sourabh’s father, Jyoti Goho, is a renowned classical harmonium player. But he was initiated into tabla playing at a very tender age of five. At the age of seven, he started learning under the great tabla maestro, Pandit Shankar Ghosh of Farukhhabad gharānā (schools or traditions), one of the six recognized gharānās of tabla.
His first stage performance was also at the tender age of ten, with his Guruji (teacher) Pandit Shankar Ghosh’s Orchestra ‘Taal-e-bole’ in the year 2000. His debut solo performance was in the year 2003 at a function organized by Vistaar, an Organisation for promoting Indian classical music. His performance was appreciated in the print media.

Over the years, he has performed in several musical concerts, and won many prizes in various competitions. He is interviewed and featured in many popular magazines like India Today, and news papers like The Statesman. When you visit his official website and blog, you will have all the details.
He is inspired by his own teacher Pandit Shankar Ghosh besides his parents. He is influenced by tabla maestros Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Bickram Ghosh. Here is a snap of Sourabh with legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain.
