Google Feature — Nutan Samarth Doodle
81st Birth Anniversary of Nutan Samarth Bahl
Today marks the 81st birth anniversary of Nutan Samarth Bahl (June 4, 1936 – February 21, 1991), better known as Nutan, a celebrated Indian film actress who appeared in more than 70 Hindi films, one Marathi, and one Telugu film in a career spanning over four decades.
Regarded as one of the finest actresses in the history of Hindi cinema, Nutan was known for communicating complex emotions using only facial expressions and body language rather than dialogue.
Nutan holds the record of five wins of the Best Actress award at Filmfare, which was held by her for over 30 years until it was matched by her niece Kajol in 2011; she is overall the most-awarded actress in the female acting categories at Filmfare, with six awards alongside Jaya Bachchan. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1974.
Google on its search page has created Nutan’s doodle reflecting her expressive acting style to pay tribute on her birthday. It was hard to sum up her genius in a single portrait, and so Google depicted four distinct expressions as a conflicted murderess from Bandini (1963), anguished untouchable from Sujata (1959) and hell-raising orphan from Seema (1955), as well one of her as her natural glamorous self. Her caricatures form the two O’s of the Google logo.
Google has celebrated Indian cinema nine times through its doodles. The latest being Nutan’s doodle on June 4.

An icon of Indian cinema for over four decades, Nutan pioneered powerful women-centric films in an age when male actors dominated the silver screen.
Over her career, her distinct, groundbreaking style helped solidify an award-winning legacy. She won the Padma Shri in 1974 for her contribution to the Arts and a total of six Filmfare Awards, five of which were for Best Actress. She remains the oldest Indian actress to win a Filmfare award.
Today’s Doodle reflects Nutan’s expressive acting style on what would have been her 81st birthday. It was hard to sum up her genius in a single portrait, and so we depicted four distinct expressions.
