Twitter News — Mamata Banerjee Bio
On Friday the 13th of May, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and the Congress alliance ended the Left Front’s stranglehold over Bengal for 34 years in a historic verdict. Trinamool Congress was formed in January 1998.
Mamata Banerjee took the oath as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Friday, May 20, 2011. Mamata who took over as Union Railway Minister in 2009 after winning the Parliamentary election, resigned from the Union cabinet a day earlier. Trinamool MP Mukul Roy was appointed as the new minister of state for railways (independent charge).
Mamata Banerjee had opened a Twitter account with username mamata_tmc on May 20, 2010. Her brief bio only mentioned her as Minister of Railways.
Unlike a Twitterati she has only 1,507 Followers, listed by only 32 users, and has tweeted only 84 times.
Her first tweet was: “I don’t believe in friendly fight”.
After winning the right to form the next government in West Bengal on May 13, 2011, she tweeted:
Thank you so much for congratulate me. It’s a clean victory of our party and TMC followers…:-)
13 May
After that she tweeted only twice on may 16:
I can’t explain my happiness by few words. Thanks once again to “MAA MATIR MANUSH” for supporting us(specialy the NANDIGRAM’s peoples)…
16 May
Her last tweet was in reply to @NANDIGRAM:
@NANDIGRAM- “If I get the opportunity, Nandigram will become my address too.”
16 May
But according to Twitter @NANDIGRAM hasn’t tweeted yet, has only 2 followers, and hasn’t followed anyone.
Her party opened a twitter account with username as aitmc as late as May 14, 2011 during the election phase.
The first tweet was:
Welcome to the official Twitter account of the All India Trinamool Congress! News and updates from the party will be posted here.
14 May
A party which swept the poll winning 184 seats in the 294-member Assembly has so far only 307 followers, listed by just 2 users, and tweeted only 54 times.
It seems that the hysterical crowds that used to greet Mamata as she raced from one rally to the other during campaigning in Kolkata didn’t bother to follow their inspirational leader or her party on Twitter.
Author Shobhaa De wrote for The Telegraph during the election phase:
She is pretty techno savvy and owns several gizmos such as an iPad, an iPod, a BlackBerry.
But neither techno savvy Mamata nor anyone else from her computer team has the time to update her Twitter bio, a one-minute job. I wish they would do so soon. Till then:
The Chief Minister of West Bengal
is still
The Minister of Railways on Twitter!
