Twitter News – New Twitter
Twitter is the best way to discover what’s new about what you find interesting.
Twitter has always been about getting a lot in a little. The constraint of 140 characters drives conciseness and lets you quickly discover and share what’s happening. But life doesn’t always fit into 140 characters or less.
So Twitter has introduced a new, re-engineered Twitter.com starting with a very small percentage of registered accounts on September 14, 2010 and coming soon to all users! The new Twitter will provide an easier, faster, and richer experience.
Twitter announced the rolling out of their new version on their blog on September 14, 2010:
Today, we’re introducing a new, re-engineered Twitter.com that provides an easier, faster, and richer experience.
On the site, you’ll see the familiar timeline, yet underneath each Tweet is a handful of information, deeper context and even embedded media. Simply click on an individual Tweet and a details pane slides out on the right and reveals this content.

They have also created an information page highlighting the new features and a demo video that I have embedded in this blog post as well:
An easier, faster, and richer experience. Coming soon to all users!
Here are some highlights mentioned on their information page and blog:
New Design
The site has a cleaner timeline, you will now find @mentions, retweets, searches, and lists just above your timeline. On the right, you can see the features you’re familiar with, including whom you recently followed and who recently followed you, favorites, and Trending Topics. And, experience infinite scroll — you no longer have to click “more” to view additional Tweets.
View Photos, Videos, and other Media Content
Now, it’s easy to see embedded photos and videos directly on Twitter in partnership with 16 different video and image sites like Flickr, TwitPic, and YouTube.
Discover Related Content
When you click a Tweet, the details pane shows additional information related to the author or subject. Depending on the Tweet’s content, you may see: @replies, other Tweets by that same user, a map of where a geotagged Tweet was sent from, and more.
Mini Profiles
Click a username to see a mini profile without navigating from the page, which provides quick access to account information, including bio and recent Tweets.
Rollout Timing
The changes will roll out as a preview over the next several weeks starting with a very small percentage of registered accounts on the launch date. Eventually, everyone will have the updated version of Twitter.
Stay tuned to our blog for more details about new features as they get implemented on more and more accounts. In the meantime, catch a glimpse of the new Twitter in this official demo video:
Twitter: discover what’s new in your world
While there may be social aspects to any medium (e.g. links to share an article by email), social media typically refers to those media whose major functions are oriented toward sharing of information, and consequently most of the information on such media are generated by users. Common examples of social media sites are Twitter and Facebook.
