Google Doodle — New Year’s Eve 2018
New Year’s Eve is on the last day of the year, December 31, in the Gregorian calendar. Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582.
It is one of the largest global celebrations where people gather in public venues to dance, eat, drink, and as the clock strikes midnight, watch or light fireworks to mark the New Year’s Day, January 1. Some people have small parties or gatherings at home to count down for the closing moments of the old year and to celebrate the New Year. They wish each other a ‘Happy New Year.’
Samoa, Tonga and Kiritimati (Christmas Island), part of Kiribati, are the first places to welcome the New Year while American Samoa and Baker Island in the USA are among the last.
All cultures do not follow the Gregorian calendar in observing New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. For example the New Year in the Hindu, Chinese, Coptic, Jewish, Islamic calendars differ to that of the Gregorian calendar.
The New Year is few hours away and the search giant Google is celebrating New Year’s Eve 2018 with an animated doodle.
The animated doodle features a pair of purple, baby elephants, wearing a yellow and a green party cap each, spiritedly waiting for the clock to strike midnight.
The cute elephant on the left is blowing balloons with its trunk and tossing them. The other baby elephant on the right is tossing popcorn from a bag into its mouth. Above them, the wall is adorned with festoons and a clock that is just about to hit midnight signifying New Year’s Eve 2018. The Google logo is also seen in the decorations.
On clicking the doodle, it takes the visitor to Google search result page for news on New Year’s Eve 2018.

A mammoth pile of balloons? Check. A ton of party hats? Check. A herd of friends and family ready to countdown? Check. Let the New Year’s Eve festivities commence! At the stroke of midnight, it’s out with the old and in with the new. We’ll sing that song ‘Should old acquaintance be forgot,’ but there’s no need to worry about our purple friends. Elephants never forget.
Happy New Year’s Eve!
