Pinterest is an online virtual pinboard that allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web.

In order to discourage its users to indiscriminately pin copyrighted material on their pinboards, Pinterest is now making available on its Getting Started help section a snippet of code.

It was published on the official Pinterest blog on February 20, 2012:

Growing Up
At the same time, we understand and respect that sometimes site owners do not want any of their material pinned. For these folks, we provide a snippet of code that can be added to any website. You can find it in our help section.

If you don’t want any material from your site to be pinned, add the meta tag provided by Pinterest to the head of any page on your site.

What if I don’t want images from my site to be pinned?
We have a small piece of code you can add to the head of any page on your site:
<meta name=”pinterest” content=”nopin” />
Getting Started

Do Not Pin It

I have created a splash page adding this meta tag. A Pinner won’t be able to pin the splash page image. Check it out:

Do Not Pin It

If you try to pin the splash page image using the Pin It bookmarklet, you will see this message:

This site doesn’t allow pinning to Pinterest. Please contact the owner with any questions. Thanks for visiting!

Pin It using Bookmarklet

If you try to Add a Pin using the image URL directly at Pinterest, you will see this message:

We couldn’t find any images: This site doesn’t allow pinning.

Add a Pin using Image URL

Of course, you can still save the image directly and upload it as your own to Pinterest.

Flickr Disables Pinterest Pins on Copyrighted Images

The Yahoo-owned photo sharing site Flickr has blocked its users from sharing certain images on Pinterest. Flickr has just added to pages with copyrighted or protected images Pinterest’s newly introduced no pin code that allows sites to prevent their content from being shared to the digital pinboard.

The code is being applied to all “non-public/non-safe page as well as when a member has disabled sharing of their Flickr content.”

Examples:

Yesterday I went to Flickr for my blog post about Ice Sculptures, and found a copyrighted image on Home page.

I never download or pin an image if sharing is disabled. But I wanted to test the no pin code so I tried to pin the image.

As expected, I got the message:

This site doesn’t allow pinning to Pinterest. Please contact the owner with any questions. Thanks for visiting!

No Pin - Sharing Disabled

But when I tried to pin an Ice Sculpture image, it was added to my pinboard despite the fact that downloading for the photo is disabled.

See the screengrab below:

Pinned - Sharing Disabled

Note:
I have removed this image from my pinboard as I never pin or publish on my blog those images that are disabled for sharing.
I pinned it for a while only to check if Flickr no pin code works for all protected images or not.
