The ten days of Onam are celebrated with great fanfare in the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam calendar. Of all these days, most important ones are the first day, Atham, and the tenth and final day, Thiru Onam. In 2014, Thiru Onam is on Sunday, September 7.

Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was assassinated a little before the sunset on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist who felt Gandhi was sympathetic to the Muslims. Martyrs’ Day in India is observed on January 30 to pay homage Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters who gave up their lives in the service of the Nation.
