The Beating the Retreat Ceremony is conducted in the capital city of Delhi in India on the evening of January 29, the third day after the Republic Day, and marks the culmination of the Republic Day festivities. The annual musical extravaganza is performed by the bands of the three wings of the military, the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. The venue is the imposing Vijay Chowk square at the foot of the Raisina Hill on which the British-built Rashtrapati Bhawan stands.
In honor of India’s 67th Republic Day, Artist Robinson Wood created today’s Google Doodle as a tribute to the camel contingent of the Border Security Force (BSF) that patrols the India-Pakistan border. Trailanga Swami (reportedly 1607 – December 26, 1887 CE) was a great Hindu yogi and mystic famed for his spiritual powers. For most of his life he stayed in Varanasi, India. Makar Sankranti is a Hindu harvest festival celebrated in almost all parts of India, Nepal and Bangladesh in many cultural forms. It falls on the Magh month of the Hindu Solar Calendar. It is celebrated on January 15 in 2016. On this day the Sun returns to the Northern Hemisphere and passes from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn (Makara). The name of the festival literally means the movement of Sun into Capricorn. Sankranti marks the termination of winter season and beginning of a new harvest or spring season.
