On Wednesday, January 18, 2012 WordPress.org joins many sites around the web, from small personal blogs to internet companies like Mozilla, Wikipedia, Reddit, and Cheezburger sites, going dark to protest two proposed laws in the United States, called SOPA and the PROTECT IP Act.

English Wikipedia blacks out for 24 hours to protest anti-piracy bills
The English version of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia blacks out its website at midnight Eastern Standard Time on Wednesday, January 18, 2011 for 24 hours in protest against anti-piracy laws being proposed in the US. Wikipedia is considered one of the Internet’s most popular websites, with millions of visitors daily.

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting “creativity”. The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites– they just have to convince a judge that the site is “dedicated to copyright infringement.”
