Twitter (born ‘Twttr’) was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Ev Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass. The public launch of what was to soon become the world’s most popular online social networking service happened a few months later on July 15, 2006. On March 21, 2006, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey posted the first ever tweet, when the service was called ‘Twttr.’ He tweeted, ‘just setting up my twttr.’

200 Million Tweets per Day

Twitter has achieved yet another milestone on June 30, 2011, it’s users now send 200 million tweets per day. A billion tweets are sent every five days on Twitter. This is up from 65 million tweets per day a year ago. Two years ago, just 10 million tweets were sent per day.

Twitter reaches another milestone hitting 20 billion tweets.

According to tracking service Giga Tweet, Twitter has now crossed a record 20 billion tweets, just two months after the previous milestone of 15 billion tweets. Twitter sets this milestone when a Japanese twitter user sent world’s 20 billionth tweet of the four-year-old website.

Twitter reached 15 billion tweets at the end of last month, three months after it broke the 10 billion count, and eight months after the 5 billionth tweet. Twitter hit the one billion tweet milestone back in the fall of 2008. Tweet count has far exceeded the world population because of its immense popularity.
