National Day of India – Teachers’ Day
Birth Anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
Teachers' Day is celebrated all over the world on different days to honor teachers for their special contributions in education.
However, World Teachers’ Day is officially celebrated by UNESCO across the world on October 5 since 1994 to honor educationists.
In India Teachers’ Day is celebrated on September 5 every year since 1962 to mark the birthday of academic philosopher Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
When he became the President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, September 5. He replied:
“Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.”
Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (September 5, 1888 – April 17, 1975) was an Indian philosopher and statesman who was the first Vice-President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India from May 13, 1962 to May 13, 1967.
