Twitter — Milestones
The micro-messaging service Twitter has reached yet another major milestone as it hits two billion tweets a month in May 2010. According to Dick Costolo, chief operating officer (COO) of Twitter, around 65 million tweets are sent on Twitter each day, equating to around 1.96 billion tweets every month. Twitter hit one billion tweets back in December 2009, and doubles the volume of monthly tweets in six months. Costolo also said that Twitter now has over 190 million users, with over 135,000 signing up each day, though it is not clear how many of those are individuals rather than business.
Twitter announced that it hit the magic 2 billion tweet mark in May, and furthermore, to show just how enormous has become, the company announced.
Pingdom, a sites and servers monitoring service, corroborates with its own estimate of 2 billion tweets per month. In fact, Pingdom first broke the news on twitter on June 8, 2010.
Here’s a chart from Pingdom showing the number of tweets per month from December through May, the path from 1 to 2 billion tweets per month on Twitter:
Pingdom also provided some impressive break up of tweets on Twitter in May:
- 64 million tweets per day
- 2.7 million tweets per hour
- 44,481 tweets per minute
- 741 tweets per second
