Twitter News – New Feature
Share buttons are small widgets added to sites to count how many times users shared a link on social media networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Share buttons help publishers grow traffic.
Twitter and facebook are most popular for sharing interesting things from the web. Facebook provids its own share button. But websites and blogs have been using tweet buttons created by third parties like TweetMeme and Topsy to enable visitors to share content on twitter. TweetMeme introduced their retweet button for publishers at the beginning of 2009.
Twitter has now officially released its own Tweet Button on August 12, 2010 to make sharing simple. They announced this new feature in their blog:
Twitter is great for sharing interesting things you find on the web. In fact, close to a quarter of all Tweets include a link in them. Despite the high volume of sharing, there is plenty of room to make it easier. Copying and pasting, link shortening, and bouncing between browser tabs just to share a link in a Tweet is too much work.
Today we’re launching the Tweet Button to make sharing simple. It lets you share links directly from the page you’re on. When you click on the Tweet Button, a Tweet box will appear — pre-populated with a shortened link that points to the item that you’re sharing.

Twitter Tweet Button is launched in collaboration with TweetMeme. TweetMeme announced in their blog:
To quickly and easily add the Tweet Button to your site and enable people share content on Twitter without having to leave the page, follow the following steps.
First get the Tweet Button for your website in three steps from: Twitter Goodies
Step 1. Choose your button, and Customize it (optional).
The button comes in three styles – vertical count, horizontal count, or no count.
Choose the various options to customize your tweet button:
By default people will include in their Tweet when they share from your website the title of the page the button is on. If you want you may enter some other text.
By default the URL for the page the button is on would be included, or you enter another URL. The button uses Twitter’s own URL shortener, the highly coveted t.co, the shortest possible domain.
You may choose the language that the button will render in on your website. People will see the Tweet dialog in their selected language for Twitter.com. At present you may choose English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese.
Step 2. Recommend people to follow (optional).
You may recommend up to two Twitter accounts for users to follow after they share content from your website. These accounts could include your own, or that of a contributor or a partner.
The chosen user(s) will be @ mentioned in the suggested Tweet.
Step 3. Preview your button, and grab your code.
The button is easy to install. Copy and paste the code into the HTML for your website wherever you want the button to appear.
See the horizontal tweet button that we have added before this post.
This plugin easily and fully implements Twitter’s own Tweet Button on your blog or site. The tweet button can be positioned as you please and can be styled to your delight in the settings page. You can configure individual messages for your posts, use the title of your entry or a default message for tweets.
I tweeted using the twitter tweet button on another post from our blog. See the screengrab below:

User Interaction
The steps a user goes through when using the Tweet Button are:

- The user is asked to login to Twitter if they aren’t already. If the user is new to Twitter they can also create an account.
- The Share Box appears already completed with the information provided in the properties of the Tweet Button. The user can change the content if they wish.
- Posting of the Tweet is confirmed and the user is suggested a maximum of two accounts they may wish to follow as provided in the properties of the Tweet Button.
- The Share Box remains open until the user presses close.
Twitter have also added a video tutorial to introduce the Tweet Button on their blog post. Check out the video on our post.
