Events from May to August 2017

1. May 3, 2017
A demonstrator catches on fire during anti-government protests in Caracas, Venezuela. It happened as protesters clashed with police and the gas tank of a police motorbike exploded. Other photos from the scene showed the man being attended to with burns on his body.

2. May 24, 2017
Migrants swim in the Mediterranean Sea after their wooden boat capsized near the Italian island of Lampedusa. More than 600 people were rescued, but at least 30 people died.

3. June 14, 2017. Grenfell Tower, London.
Burning debris falls from the Grenfell Tower, a high-rise apartment building in London, during a deadly fire. Dozens of people were killed, and British Prime Minister Theresa May announced a full public inquiry into the disaster.

4. June 28, 2017. Mosul, Iraq.
An aerial view shows the destroyed al-Nuri mosque during fighting between Iraqi security forces and ISIS militants in Mosul, Iraq. ISIS, through its news agency, said US warplanes were responsible for the loss and its leaning minaret. US officials told CNN the ISIS claim was “1,000% false.” Iraqi military commanders said ISIS militants blew the mosque up after troops closed in. The destruction could amount to a war crime, according to the UN Human Rights Council.

5. July 1, 2017. London.
Grenfell Tower looming over a Tube station. A 24-story public housing building, Grenfell caught fire on June 14, killing 71 people.

6. July 12, 2017. Mosul, Iraq.
Iraqi soldiers washed and dressed a boy who had been carried out of an area under Islamic State control by a man suspected of being a militant.

7. July 25, 2017
Bodies of dead migrants are piled up inside a rubber boat in the Mediterranean Sea, about 15 miles north of Sabratha, Libya. Rescuers saved 167 migrants from the boat and said it was one of the worst conditions of overcrowding they had ever seen.

8. July 25, 2017
Conjoined twins Rabia and Rukia stay at a hospital in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They were waiting on medical opinions over whether they would be separated by a surgical procedure.
