Students appear for a board examination at the end of year 10 and 12 in their selected subjects. The Examinations are administered either by one of the two examining bodies which operate throughout India i.e. Central Board Of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), or, any of the State Boards of Education which operate only within the respective states and cater to regional requirements of the students. Schools have the option of choosing to be affiliated to any of these Boards of Examination and prepare their students according to the curriculum recommended.

CENTRAL BOARD OF SECONDARY EDUCATION (CBSE)

Major Objectives

The Central Board of Secondary Education was set up to achieve certain interlinked objectives:

• To prescribe conditions of examinations and conduct public examinations at the end of Class X and XII. To grant qualifying certificates to successful candidates of the affiliated schools.
• To fulfil the educational requirements of those students whose parents were employed in transferable jobs.
• To prescribe and update the courses of instructions for examinations.
• To affiliate institutions for the purpose of examination and raise the academic standards of the country.

The Board also promotes:

Innovations in teaching learning methodologies by devising student friendly and student centred paradigms.

• Reforms in examinations and evaluation practices.
• Skill learning by adding job oriented and job linked inputs.
• Regularly updating the pedagogical skills of the teachers and administrators by conducting in service training programs, workshops, etc.

CBSE Board Examinations

The annual examinations are conducted by the Board in the month of March at the end of Class X and XII. The Board issues qualifying certificates for the same. The Core-curriculum at the secondary or Class X stage comprises of the study of Languages, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies as the subjects of external assessment. Physical and Health Education, Art Education and Work Experience are studied and continuously assessed internally by the schools.

At the senior school level or class XII, the Board provides adequate flexibility to the candidates in the choice of the subjects. However, the number of subjects assessed externally by the Board remains as five with three subjects of internal assessment in General Studies, Work Experience and Physical &Health Education. The Board has recently introduced Generic Vocational Course which a student can offer now in lieu of Work Experience.

Group Mathematics Olympiad

CBSE has been undertaking examinations as projects. One of these projects is Group Mathematics Olympiad Which aim at identification of talent in mathematics and promoting quality and excellence. This in view CBSE held First Mathematics Olympiad Examination for the students of CBSE affiliated schools in the year 1998-99. The National Board of Higher Mathematics provided an opportunity to CBSE by recognizing this examination for participation in the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. The competition was conducted at 19 centers countrywide and 21 students qualified for Indian Mathematical Olympiad as CBSE group.

• The Board awards subject wise Merit Certificates to 0.1% of successful candidates in each subject.
• The number of Merit Certificates in a subject are determined by rounding off the number of candidates passing the subject, to the nearest multiple of thousand. If the number of candidates passing a subject is less than 500, no Merit Certificate is issued.

In case of ties, if one student gets a Merit Certificate all candidates getting that score will get the Merit Certificate.
