Of the
total admissions (one crore) in higher education institutes in the country,
16% are from the SC/ST category. In IIMs, only 16.45% seats are filled by
SC/ST students. In IITs, the percentage is about 18. Over 73% of SC students
and 79% of ST students drop out from schools by the time they reach Class X.
The dropout rate for general category students is about 52%.
A FICCI study points out that 40% SC and 60% ST vacancies remain
unfilled in vocational institutes.

At GSVM Medical College, Kanpur,

32.69% for ST and 19.66% for others.
