XIX Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010
Commonwealth Games is the world’s second-most important multi-sport event after the Olympic Games. It is held every four years involving the elite athletes of the Commonwealth of Nations.
The nineteenth edition of the Games is scheduled to be held in Delhi, India between October 3, 2010 and October 14, 2010.
Commonwealth Games – Editions
The name of the Games has changed over the years:
- 1930 – 1950 : British Empire Games
- 1954 – 1966 : British Empire and Commonwealth Games
- 1970 – 1974 : British Commonwealth Games
- 1978 to date : Commonwealth Games
British Empire Games (1930 – 1950)
The first edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Hamilton, Canada from 16 – 23 August, 1930 and 400 competitors from 11 nations took part in 6 sports and 59 events.
The second edition of Commonwealth Games was held in London, England a from 4 – 11 August, 1934 and 500 competitors from 16 nations took part in 6 sports and 68 events.
The third edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Sydney, Australia from 5 – 12 February, 1938 and 464 competitors from 15 nations took part in 7 sports and 71 events.
The quadrennial schedule of the games was interrupted by World War II and the 1942 Games (set to be held in Montreal, Canada) were abandoned. The games were continued in 1950.
The fourth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Auckland, New Zealand from 4 – 11 February, 1950 and 590 competitors from 12 nations took part in 9 sports and 88 events.
British Empire and Commonwealth Games (1954 – 1966)
The Games underwent a name change in 1954 with the first British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954.
The fifth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Vancouver, Canada from 30 July – 7 August, 1954 and 662 competitors from 24 nations took part in 9 sports and 91 events.
The sixth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Cardiff, Wales from 18 – 26 July, 1958 and 1122 competitors from 36 nations took part in 9 sports and 94 events.
The seventh edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Perth, Australia from 22 November – 1 December, 1962 and 863 competitors from 35 nations took part in 9 sports and 104 events.
The eighth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Kingston, Jamaica from 4 – 13 August, 1966 and 1050 competitors from 34 nations took part in 9 sports and 110 events.
British Commonwealth Games (1970 – 1974)
The event was briefly known as the British Commonwealth Games for the 1970 and 1974 editions.
The ninth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Edinburgh, Scotland from 16 – 25 July, 1970 and 1383 competitors from 42 nations took part in 9 sports and 121 events.
The tenth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Christchurch, New Zealand from 24 January – 2 February, 1974 and 1276 competitors from 38 nations took part in 9 sports and 121 events.
Commonwealth Games (1978 to date)
The 1978 Games were the first to be held under the title of the “Commonwealth Games”.
The eleventh edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Edmonton, Canada from 3 – 12 August, 1978 and 1474 competitors from 46 nations took part in 10 sports and 128 events.
The twelvth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Brisbane, Australia from 30 September — 9 October, 1982 and 1583 competitors from 46 nations took part in 10 sports and 142 events.
Participation at the 1986 Games was affected by a boycott by some African and Caribbean nations in protest to the participation of New Zealand, following the All Blacks Rugby tour of Apartheid era South Africa in 1985.
The thirteenth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Edinburgh, Scotland from 24 July – 2 August, 1986 and 1662 competitors from 26 nations took part in 10 sports and 163 events.
The fourteenth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Auckland, New Zealand from 24 January – 3 February, 1990 and 2073 competitors from 55 nations took part in 10 sports and 204 events.
The fifteenth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Victoria, Canada from 18 – 28 August, 1994 and 2557 competitors from 63 nations took part in 10 sports and 217 events.
The 1998 Games saw the sporting programme grow from 10 to 15 sports as team sports were allowed for the first time.
The sixteenth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Kuala Lpur, Malaysia from 11 – 21 September, 1998 and 3633 competitors from 70 nations took part in 15 sports and 213 events.
The seventeenth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Manchester, England from 25 July – 4 August, 2002 and 3679 competitors from 72 nations took part in 17 sports and 281 events.
The eighteenth edition of Commonwealth Games was held in Melbourne, Australia from 15 – 26 March, 2006 and 4049 competitors from 71 nations took part in 16 sports and 245 events.
The nineteenth edition of Commonwealth Games is scheduled to be held in Delhi, India from 3 – 14 October, 2010 and ? competitors from 73 nations took part in 17 sports and 285 events.
The twentieth edition of Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from 23 July – 3 August, 2014.
The three nations to have hosted the games the most number of times are Australia (4), Canada (4), and New Zealand (3). Furthermore, five editions have taken place in the countries within the United Kingdom. Two cities have held the games on multiple occasions: Auckland (1950 and 1990), and Edinburgh (1970 and 1986).
