Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das (November 5, 1870 – June 16, 1925), popularly known as CR Das, was a leading Indian politician, a prominent lawyer (Barrister), a major activist of the Anushilan Samiti, a non-violence nationalist of the Indian Independence Movement, a poet, and founder-leader of the Swaraj (Self Rule) Party in Bengal during British occupation in India.

As a politician he was with Indian National Congress (Before 1923) and with Swaraj Party (1923 to 1925).

He was affectionately called Deshbandhu (Friend of the Nation).

He was born in Calcutta on November 5, 1870. His father, Babu Bhuban Mohan Das, was a solicitor by profession and a journalist who edited the English church weekly, The Brahmo Public Opinion. He belonged to a respectable and progressive Baidya family of Telirbagh, Bikrampur, Dacca, now in Bangladesh. He passed away in Darjeeling on June 16, 1925 with a severe fever. Mahatma Gandhi led his public funeral procession.

At the time of his death, Mahatma Gandhi publically said,
Deshbandhu was one of the greatest of men… He dreamed… and talked of freedom of India and of nothing else… His heart knew no difference between Hindus and Mussalmans and I should like to tell Englishmen, too, that he bore no ill-will to them.

Chittaranjan Das — Friend of the Nation

We stand then for freedom, because we claim the right to develop our own individuality and evolve our own destiny along our own lines, unembarrassed by what Western civilisation has to teach us and unhampered by the institutions which the West has imposed.

Chittaranjan Das Quote C2Q01
Swaraj means that we must live within ourselves, we must be self-contained. I tell you we are great slaves to-day. Our economic slavery is greater than our political slavery… From Manchester comes 60 crores rupees worth of cloth every year. You will not have to pay these 60 crores rupees which go out of India. If a householder works by Charkha for one or two hours a day at the end of the year he will find himself with all the necessaries of his family.
