Weekend Image Post – Durga Puja Parikrama
Durga Puja is the biggest and most important occasion of the year in Kolkata. The festival sees huge, elaborately crafted idols of Goddess Durga installed in homes and beautifully decorated podiums all over the city.
Any Durga Puja celebration is incomplete without visiting the many different pandals (displays) of Goddess Durga, each with a unique theme. A major attraction during the festival, this activity is often referred to a Pandal Hopping.
More than two thousand thematic and colorful pandals are set up in Kolkata, all clamoring for the admiration and praise of the people. Some stand out more than others, as a result of their captivating decorations. Most popular time for pandal hopping is in the night when the city is adorned with lights. However, if you go during the day, you can avoid much of the crowd. Bengali from all over the country and from different parts of the world visit the city during puja to reunite with their family and friends, and every night is one mad carnival where thousands of people go pandal hopping. Traffic comes to a standstill, and indeed, most people abandon their vehicles to travel by foot after a point.
Pandals and sculptures are inspired by elaborate and innovative themes. They attract huge gathering of people and are well received. Puja committees explore all types of creative avenues to draw crowds. Social issues are gradually emerging as a central theme for many popular pujas in Kolkata. However, art and technology have mingled in this year’s autumnal festival to present a unique 3D digital image of Goddess Durga at Jodhpur Park pandal in Kolkata.
The magnificence of the festival is revealed in these twelve famous and extravagant Pandals in Kolkata, some modern and some traditional, that were worth visiting during Durga Puja in 2014.
