113th Birth Anniversary of Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa
Today marks the 113th birth anniversary of Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa (December 29, 1904 – November 11, 1994).
Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, popularly known by the pen name Kuvempu or by the abbreviation K V Puttappa was an Indian novelist, poet, playwright, critic and thinker. Kuvempu is considered among the greatest Kannada writers of his time, most of his works are written in Kannada and he was a strong proponent of the language.
He was recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award of India. Among Kannada writers, Kuvempu was the first to win the prestigious Jnanpith Award for his work on Sri Ramayana Darshanam, the complete Ramayana in Kannada.
For his contributions to Kannada Literature, the Government of Karnataka decorated him with the honorific Rashtrakavi (National Poet) in 1958 and Karnataka Ratna (Gem of Karnataka) in 1992. He penned the Karnataka State Anthem Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate.
Kuvempu studied at Mysore University in 1920’s, taught there for nearly 3 decades and rose to be Vice-Chancellor of the University (1956-60). He initiated Teaching in Kannada Medium. Kuvempu University was established in his honour in his home district of Shimoga, Karnataka, India.

Today we celebrate the life and literature of Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, a renowned 20th century Indian poet and author. Known more famously by his pen name Kuvempu, he is considered one of the greatest Kannada writers of his time. The Kannada language is spoken mainly in Kuvempu’s home state of Karnataka, and he strongly advocated for it to be the main medium of education.
Kuvempu’s poem featured above is Poovu (The Flower), rhapsodizing on the beauty of the poet’s natural surroundings. Kuvempu loved his writing to reflect the simple wonder of the world around him, especially flowers. To celebrate Kuvempu’s life and work, today’s Doodle by illustrator Upamanyu Bhattacharyya (and Swati Shelar, who helped with the Kannada lettering) shows Kuvempu surrounded by nature in his beloved home.
