Halloween is coming up next Saturday. Many people around the world celebrate Halloween, which occurs annually on October 31 by holding super parties, dressing up and going ‘trick or treating’. It used to be called All Hallows Eve, or the day before All Saints’ Day, observed on November 1. Witches’ hats and carved pumpkins symbolize Halloween. Other common symbols of Halloween include pumpkin lanterns, witches, wizards, ghosts, spirits, skeletons and characters from horror films. Animals associated with the festival include bats, spiders and black cats. The colours green, orange, grey and black are very common.
Halloween originated from pagan festivals held around the end of October in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. People believed that, at this time of year, the spirits of dead people could come ‘alive’ and walk among the living. They thought that it was important to dress up in costumes when venturing outside, to avoid being harmed by the spirits. This may be the origin of the Halloween costumes seen today.
What do people do?
Some aspects of the modern Halloween celebrations, such as cheerful carving lanterns out of vegetables originated long ago. Others were introduced more recently, often as a form of commercial promotion. Many stores and businesses see Halloween as a chance to promote products with a Halloween theme.
Many homes and party venues are decorated to fit the Halloween theme during this period. Decorations include fake cobwebs, jack-o-lanterns and images of black cats or witches. Other elements of the Pagan celebration are retained, as Halloween is still a night to remember the spirits and other supernatural themes.
Teens love to dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating adventure. This means they go to other peoples’ houses, knocking on the door for treat of sweets or a snack. Some people give out treats while others request a trick, which often involves children presenting a small joke or trick.
Halloween celebrations include costume parties held on or around Halloween, where the hosts and guests often dress up as witches, ghosts, skeletons or other scary figures or as fictitious characters from horror films, television shows or books to reflect the day’s theme.
Halloween is the one time of the year where you can unleash your inner desires and dress up as any fantasy you want, without anyone giving you weird looks if only for this one night.
