Ganesh Chaturthi — Deity of Prosperity, Wisdom and Good Luck

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, is a ten day Hindu festival celebrated to honour God Ganesha’s birthday. Although he is known by many attributes, Ganesha’s elephant head makes him easy to identify. He is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Ganesha is known by 108 different names, and is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. Lord Ganesha is worshipped by the believers at the beginning of any new ventures based on the belief that Ganesha can take away any obstacle that may come around.

Ganesh Chaturthi 2017 begins on Friday, August 25 and ends on Tuesday, September 5.

Legends

There are two different versions about Ganesha’s birth:

One has it that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha out of the sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life into the figure. She then set him to stand guard at her door and instructed him not to let anyone enter. Shiva who has gone out, returned at that time, but as Ganesha didn’t know him, stopped him from entering. Shiva, enraged by Ganesh’s impudence, drew his trident and cut off Ganesha’s head. Parvati emerged to find Ganesha decapitated and flew into a rage. Shiva promised Ganesha will live again. Shiva, in an attempt to pacify Parvati, sent his ganas, or hordes, to find a child whose mother is facing away from the child in negligence, to cut off the child’s head and return quickly with it. The first living thing they came across was an elephant facing north, the auspicious direction associated with wisdom, so they returned with the head of the elephant. Shiva placed it on the headless body of Parvati’s son and breathed life into him.

The other legend has it that Ganesha was created by Shiva and Parvati on request of the Devas, to be a vighnakartaa (obstacle-creator) in the path of rakshasas (demonic beings), and a vighnahartaa (obstacle-averter) to help the Devas.

Celebrations

The festival starts on the fourth day, Shukla Chaturthi, in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada and ends on the tenth day, Anant Chaturdashi, which typically falls in Gregorian months of August or September. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi begins on August 25 and ends on September 5. It is one of the most colourful ten day long celebrations.

In India, Ganesh Chaturthi is primarily celebrated at home and in public by local community groups in the central and western states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa and the southern states of Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.

Ganesh Chaturthi is the biggest festival of Mumbai. The festival will be celebrated across Mumbai with much fanfare and fervour. On the last day of the festival, the idol is taken across the city in a procession marked by celebrations and immersed in the sea.

There are four main rituals during the festival: Pranapratishhtha – the process of infusing the deity into an idol, Shhodashopachara – 16 forms of paying tribute to Ganesha, Uttarpuja – Puja after which the idol could be shifted after it’s infusion, Ganpati Visarjan – immersion of the Idol in the river.

Ganesh Chartuthi starts with Vedic hymns, prayers, vrata and hindu texts such as Ganesha Upanishad. Offerings of prasada after the prayer and distributing amongst the community people, prasada include sweets, modaka ( it is believed to be the favourite sweet of ganesha).

Ganesh Chaturthi Mantra &mdash, Lord Ganesha Invocation

Ganesha can be viewed as a symbol of that energy which can help us overcome the obstacles in our path to spiritual growth and enlightenment. The chanting of Ganesha mantras is believed to invoke a connection to the particular energy associated with the deity that is being addressed by the mantra.
Before you start the Ganesh Chaturthi pooja, repeat the following Ganesha mantra, popularly known as the vakratunda mantra, five times to remove all the hurdles which comes in your way this year.

Transliteration
 Vakratunda Mahaakaaya Suryakoti Samaprabhaa
Nirvighnam Kurumedeva Sarvakaaryeshu Sarvadaa
Translation:
Salutations to the supreme Lord Ganesha, whose curved trunk (vakra-tunda) and massive body (maha-kaayaa) shines like a million suns (surya-koti) and showers his blessings on everyone (sama-prabhaa). Oh my lord of lords Ganesha (kurume-deva), kindly remove all obstacles (nir-vighnam) from all my endeavors (sarva-kaaryeshu), always (sarvadaa).

What are Shlokas?

Shlokas are actually one category of hymns which follow a particular structure (known as chhandas) of construction and are chanted in various rhythms. Whereas Mantras belong to vedic period, the shlokas said to have originated from Ramayana times when Sage Valmiki inadvertently uttered a shloka which later led to the creation of Ramayana at the insistence of Lord Brahma himself. Shlokas are created and chanted in praise of Gods in form of daily prayers and special rituals. Shlokas together combine to form hymns which are chanted out of devotion, to remove obstacles in life, for prosperity, well-being etc.

Correct Way to Recite Ganesha Mantras

There are certain things one must keep in mind before he begins the incantation of God Ganesha mantras, like:

  • Bathe or Wash your hands and feet before beginning the prayer service.
  • Devote yourself completely to Lord Ganesha and open yourself to the positivity of the Universe.
  • Be regular in your chanting for 48 days at least and follow your routine with dedication.
  • Chant the mantras 108 times on the beads of the rosary every day.

    • A religion is faith in certain guidelines for life. Different faiths practice in different manner. In every religion you need to accept the existence of a God and follow his teachings. One cannot be an atheist and say that he is a believer of so and so faith. But one can be an atheist and be a follower of Sanatana Dharma because it allows you to question anything in search of knowledge. All the Upanishads were born this way. It’s wrong to say Hindus have so many Gods. Hindus too believe in ‘Ishwar’ that others may call God or Allah, etc. Hinduism is a way of life, vibrant with festivals and rituals. This space is not enough to explain Sanatan Dharma and Hinduism, and what’s the difference between the two. Both are not teachings of a SINGLE PROPHET, and both are not confined in a SINGLE BOOK of religion. In short, Hindus celebrate life observing various festivals and rituals that are so colourful and vibrant, and not just a certain day parade. A Hindu may accept another faith but no one could become a Hindu by conversion, nevertheless he may become a believer in Sanatan Dharma or Hinduism. Thanks for your interest in the blog post.
