My India – Mars Orbit Insertion
India Reaches the Red Planet Mars!
India joined today an exclusive global league of deep space explorers when its indigenous-made Mangalyaan spacecraft successfully entered the orbit of the red planet Mars after a 10-month over 650-million kilometer voyage on a relatively shoe-string budget.
The Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), informally called Mangalyaan, is an indigenous built Mars orbiter that was successfully launched on board of PSLV C25 from the First Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota, India on November 5, 2013.
The Mangalyaan entered the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014 at 7:18 IST. The European Space Agency’s Earth station at Madrid confirmed insertion into the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014 at 7:54 IST.
India becomes the first country in the world to enter the Mars orbit on its first attempt. Only the US, Europe and Russia have, so far, sent probes that have orbited or landed on Mars. China tried, and failed, to enter in 2011. Japan’s Mars mission had failed too in 2003. The success of the Mars Orbiter Mission, therefore, makes India the only Asian nation to have achieved the feat. But ISRO has dismissed any talk of the mission being about an Asian space race.
India’s Rs450-crore expedition cost is about a tenth of NASA’s Mars mission, Maven, which entered the orbit of Mars on Monday.
One of the main objectives of the first Indian mission to Mars is to develop the technologies required for design, planning, management and operations of an interplanetary mission.
The five payloads on-board ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission:
- Mars Colour Camera (MCC)
- Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS)
- Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM)
- Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA)
- Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP)
