Martyrs Day in India

68th Death Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

Graphic Quote Art — Martyrs Quotes

Martyrs’ Day in India, is observed at the national level on January 30, the anniversary of the assassination of the father of the nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, in 1948. The Nation pays homage to the Mahatma and other martyrs who gave their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom on January 30 every year.

Gandhiji was assassinated on Jan 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse who held him responsible for the partition of India. For this evil deed Godse was hanged on November 15, 1949.

On Martyrs’ Day the president, the vice president, the prime minister, the defense minister, and the three Service Chiefs visit Raj Ghat to lay wreaths and remember martyrs. The armed forces personnel blow bugles sounding the Last Post. The inter-services contingent reverse arms as a mark of respect. Silence is observed and work and movement stopped for two minutes throughout the country at 11 am. The participants at Raj Ghat hold all-religion prayers and sing bhajans.

India is among other 15 countries of the world where Martyrs’ Day is celebrated every year to pay homage to the freedom fighters.

On the Martyrs’ Day in India on January 30, I am inspired by two famous quotes about Martyr and Martyrdom: first of Napoleon – ‘It is the cause, and not the death, that makes the martyr,’ and secondly of Soren Kierkegaard – ‘The tyrant dies and his rule is over; the martyr dies and his rule begins.’

To celebrate Martyrs’ Day and pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi and other martyrs, we have compiled ten inspirational Martyrs Quotes designed by GoldenTwine Graphic.
