Festivals of India — Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami
As per Hindu Calendar Vasant Panchami is observed during Shukla Paksha Panchami (the fifth day) of Magha lunar month. In my native state of West Bengal, Vasant Panchami is celebrated as Saraswati Puja. According to Bengali Panjika, February 13, 2016 marks Saraswati Puja.
Vasant Panchami is significant for worshipping Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge and wisdom. Vasant Panchami is believed to be the birth anniversary of goddess Saraswati. Hence the day of Vasant Panchami is also known as Saraswati Jayanti.
The day of Vasant Panchami is significant for Akshar-Abhyasam or Vidya-Arambham, the ritual of introducing young children to the world of education and formal learning. In West Bengal, Hate Khori is the ceremony of learning Bengali alphabets. Most schools and colleges arrange Saraswati Puja on the day of Vasant Panchami.
