
Today marks the 153rd birth anniversary of Rukhmabai Raut (November 22, 1864 – September 25, 1955), also known as Rakhmabai Raut, who overcame numerous obstacles to become one of the first practicing women doctors in British India. She was born in Mumbai, then Bombay, on November 22, 1864. She was a child bride, married off at the age of 11, to Dadaji Bhikaji, 19. She did not stop with medicine, choosing to become a social reformer until her death at the age of 91, on September 25, 1955.
