During the first week of October we celebrate Older Persons Week and on October 1 it is the International Day of Older Persons. The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Older Persons is observed on October 1 each year as a special day for older persons worldwide. On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated October 1 the International Day of Older Persons. The holiday was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.

Parents play a vital role in the lives of children. From the day we are born, parents are our protectors, teachers, mentors, well-wishers, providers and role models. Every year, the 21st of August is observed as Senior Citizens Day across the world, including India. The day is an opportunity to acknowledge the significant contribution, sacrifices, and dedication of elder persons, and to ensure that we are doing our best to give something back to older men and women.

A size-nine Peter Lord shoe box full of 178 photographs capturing life in India at least a century ago had been discovered in the archives of Scotland’s national collections in 2012. The plate-glass negatives were found inside a shoe box by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) in Edinburgh. The negatives, believed to be dating back to 1912, were found in a fragile condition and were wrapped in copies of the Statesman newspaper dating from 1914, the RCAHMS said in a statement.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014 is to be awarded to India’s Kailash Satyarthi and Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai “for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.” The winners this year were selected from a list of 278 nominees, the highest number of candidates ever.
