Krishna Janmashtami or simply Janmashtami, also known as Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanti, Saatam Aatham, Dahi Handi, is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. It is observed according to Hindu lunar calendar, on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the month of Shravana (overlaps with August and September of the Gregorian calendar). Janmashtami falls on August 14 in 2017 for Smarta Sampradaya. For Vaishanava Sampradaya and ISKCON Janmashtami falls on August 15 in 2017.

The festival is observed in Shravana month during Purnima (full moon) day, and typically falls in Gregorian calendar month of August. In 2017, it is celebrated on August 7.

Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is an ancient Hindu festival that ritually celebrates the affectionate bond between brothers and sisters. It is also called Rakhi Purnima, or simply Rakhi (sacred thread of love). ‘Raksha’ means protection and ‘Bandhan’ means a bond (a bond of protection).
