The Worst Pop Song of All Time

10 million YouTube hits for Rebecca Black's music video Friday

Rebecca Black's Friday

Weekend Video Post – Rebecca Black

US teen Rebecca Black’s music video called Friday, described as “the worst pop song of all time”, has become a global sensation, view count leaped to 10 million on YouTube and catapulting its fun loving 13 year-old American performer to stardom.

Friday is either a witty parody of saccharine teen-pop or a new low in manufactured song production. The song, which details the fresh-faced California girl’s excitement at the impending weekend, has become a YouTube sensation since she posted the video on February 10, 2011.

The song labelled “the worst ever” by thousands of online reviewers is rapidly climbing the iTunes charts. It has trended on Twitter and been a hot topic of conversation and criticism in the blogosphere and online forums. However most of the comments on the songs are not flattering. Black’s monotonous auto-tuned vocal has been mocked. Rolling Stone criticised the song’s “sub-par production values, grating hooks and extraordinarily stupid lyrics”.

The chorus, “Yesterday was Thursday, Thursday/ Today is Friday, Friday (Partyin’)/ Tomorrow is Saturday/And Sunday comes afterwards”, has now spawned a host of YouTube parodies.

Aspiring vocalist Rebecca Black, from Anaheim, the home of Disneyland, is the product of Los Angeles based Ark Music Factory that offers rich parents the chance to turn their kids into pop stars for around $US2000. Ark writes and produces bespoke songs for star-struck teens and produces low-budget videos. Friday is written by Patrice Wilson and Clarence Jey, who claim to have completed exams at the Trinity College of Music.

Update:
Despite criticisms Rebecca is having the last laugh.
The music video for her debut song, Friday, has garnered about 27 million views on YouTube, while the single has rocketed into the top 20 on the iTunes charts this week – for a time ahead of Justin Bieber, who Black has already asked to join her in a duet.
Rebecca Black is now on Twitter (@MsRebeccaBlack) with almost 25,000 followers, thanks to entertainment personality Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest), who helped her set up her account.
