Today marks the 220th birth anniversary of Mirza Ghalib (December 27, 1797 – February 15, 1869). Mirza Ghalib, was a prominent Urdu and Persian language poet during the last years of the Mughal Empire. He used his pen-names of Ghalib (means ‘dominant’) and Asad (means ‘lion’). His honorific was Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula. Mirza Ghalib breathed his last on February 15, 1869. His tomb is located near Chausath Khamba, Nizamuddin area in Delhi. He was notable for his voice and versatility; his songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans. Today marks the 104th birth anniversary of Homai Vyarawalla (December 9, 1913 – January 15, 2012), commonly known by her pseudonym ‘Dalda 13,’ who was India’s first woman photojournalist. Her pseudonym comes from the year of her birth, 1913, and the Dalda from her car’s registration number DLD 13. She was known for widely photographing India’s transition from the British Raj to an independent country after its subsequent partition. She was born in a Parsi family on December 9, 1913 at Navsari, Bombay state, British India. She breathed her last on January 15, 2012 at the age of 98 at Vadodara, Gujarat. Today marks the 153rd birth anniversary of Rukhmabai Raut (November 22, 1864 – September 25, 1955), also known as Rakhmabai Raut, who overcame numerous obstacles to become one of the first practicing women doctors in British India. She was born in Mumbai, then Bombay, on November 22, 1864. She was a child bride, married off at the age of 11, to Dadaji Bhikaji, 19. She did not stop with medicine, choosing to become a social reformer until her death at the age of 91, on September 25, 1955. Today marks the 151st birth anniversary of Cornelia Sorabji (November 15, 1866 – July 6, 1954), who overcame numerous obstacles to become India’s first female lawyer. Cornelia Sorabji was the first woman permitted to attend Bombay University, where she excelled. She then went on to become the first Indian woman to study law at Oxford University in 1892. However, she was unable to practice law in England. Cornelia returned to India in 1894 where she was again barred from practicing her profession. Google today celebrates the 151st Birth Anniversary of Cornelia Sorabji with a doodle. Today’s Doodle by illustrator Jasjyot Singh Hans depicts Sorabji in front of the Allahabad High Court, to which she was eventually admitted.

Google Doodle Celebrates Anasuya Sarabhai’s 132nd Birthday

She was a pioneer of women’s labour movement in India and founded Majoor Mahajan Sangh.

Today marks the 132nd birth anniversary of Anasuya Sarabhai (November 11, 1885 – 1972). She was a pioneer of the women’s labour movement in India. She founded the Majdoor Mahajan Sangh (Ahmedabad Textile Labour Association), India’s oldest union of textile workers, in 1920. She was affectionately known as Motaben (Elder Sister in Gujarati). The labour movement leader died in 1972. Google today celebrates the 132nd Birth Anniversary of Anasuya Sarabhai with a doodle.

Sitara Devi (November 8, 1920 – November 25, 2014) was an eminent Indian dancer of the classical Kathak style of dancing. Her performances on and off the silver screen revived popular interest in the classical dance of Kathak. Over the years, she performed all over India, and at prestigious international venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, London in 1967; and at the Carnegie Hall, New York in 1976. Google today celebrates the 97th Birth Anniversary of Sitara Devi with a doodle.
