Ten Rare and 100-Year-Old Photos of Calcutta
A century old photos of Calcutta from British Raj found in a shoe box.
A size-nine Peter Lord shoe box full of 178 photographs capturing life in India at least a century ago had been discovered in the archives of Scotland’s national collections in 2012. The plate-glass negatives were found inside a shoe box by the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) in Edinburgh. The negatives, believed to be dating back to 1912, were found in a fragile condition and were wrapped in copies of the Statesman newspaper dating from 1914, the RCAHMS said in a statement.

Today marks the 219th birth anniversary of Mirza Asadullah Beg Khan ‘Ghalib’. Mirza Ghalib (December 27, 1797 – February 15, 1869), was pre-eminent Urdu and Persian language poet during the last years of the Mughal Empire. He used his pen-names of Ghalib (means ‘dominant’) and Asad (means ‘lion’). His honorific was Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula.

Google has commemorated the 158th anniversary of the birthday of scientist Jagadish Chandra Bose (November 30, 1858 – November 23, 1937). Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, CSI, CIE, FRS, was a polymath, physicist, biologist, biophysicist, botanist and archaeologist, and an early writer of science fiction. Living in British India, he pioneered the investigation of radio and microwave optics, made very significant contributions to plant science, and laid the foundations of experimental science in the Indian subcontinent.

The internet giant Google’s eighteenth birthday is being celebrated with an animated colourful doodle on home page on September 27, 2016. The doodle shows Google’s “G” with a cute tiny pink birthday hat blowing up a long party balloon to spell out the rest of company’s name, before being carried off into the sky. In the backdrop are two bunches of bright balloons. Each bunch has three balloons representing the six letters G O O G L E.

April 23, 2016 is the 400th death anniversary of William Shakespeare, famously known as the ‘Bard of Avon’. William Shakespeare was a renowned English poet, playwright, dramatist and actor as well. Google doodle celebrates the incredible work of William Shakespeare on his 400th death anniversary. The doodle features the bard in the middle, with four illustrations of his famous works on either side of him.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sent the first tweet ever ten years ago on March 21.
Twitter (born ‘Twttr’) was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Ev Williams, Biz Stone and Noah Glass. The public launch of what was to soon become the world’s most popular online social networking service happened a few months later on July 15, 2006. On March 21, 2006, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey posted the first ever tweet, when the service was called ‘Twttr.’ He tweeted, ‘just setting up my twttr.’

The celebration was started in the year 2006 by 66 countries. Within two years, this number rose to 88. The theme for 2016 is ‘Kidney Disease & Children, Act Early to Prevent it’.
